"We are our ancestors’ wildest dreams."
Throughout history, BIPOC women have built movements, led revolutions, and nurtured communities—yet, many of us still battle the weight of feeling like we don’t belong. Whether it’s imposter syndrome at work, navigating predominantly white spaces, or internalized messages that tell us we are "too much" or "not enough," the feeling of unbelonging can be heavy.
But here’s the truth: we have always belonged.
Our history is one of resilience, brilliance, and undeniable impact. From the underground networks of Harriet Tubman to the fearless organizing of Dolores Huerta, from the revolutionary words of Audre Lorde to the unapologetic leadership of Wilma Mankiller—our ancestors carved space where there was none. And now, it’s our time to step into that space fully.
Honoring Our Legacy, Releasing the Lie of Unbelonging
If you've ever questioned your place in a room, a workplace, or even within your own community, remember:
Our existence is resistance. The world has long tried to erase our voices, our contributions, and our power. The simple act of showing up as your full self is a revolutionary act.
We carry ancestral wisdom. The struggles we face are not new; they are echoes of past battles. And just like our foremothers, we carry within us the strength to overcome them.
We define our own belonging. No institution, no system, no individual has the right to tell us where we do or do not belong. That power belongs to us alone.
Ways to Overcome the Feeling of Unbelonging
Reconnect with History: Learn about the women who paved the way for you. Find strength in their resilience.
Build Community: Surround yourself with people who see, affirm, and uplift you.
Challenge the Internalized Doubt: When that voice creeps in saying, "Maybe I don’t deserve to be here," remind yourself: "I am here because I belong."
Celebrate Your Wins: BIPOC women often downplay their accomplishments. This month, take time to recognize your achievements, no matter how small.
Use Your Voice: Whether in meetings, family spaces, or personal projects, make space for yourself to be heard.
